photo friday: young and old

This week’s Photo Friday challenge is Young and Old. Okay, I know my son Andy isn’t exactly old, although compared to his newborn daughter he is! In this photo I caught Brooklyn giving her old man a perfect little pout:)

Fathers, be good to your daughters…You are the god and the weight of her world. ~ John Mayor

dog’s life

This is Jake. A couple of times each summer, Jake comes over with our friends Ann and Shirley and he goes for a swim in our pool. He has trained us humans to throw a ball into the water and he swims out after it – we repeat this drill over and over again. We love to watch Jake chase his yellow tennis ball because he does it with such complete joy and abandon. When I go in the pool it has to be warm enough. I try not to get my hair wet because I don’t want it to get frizzy and I’m afraid the chlorine will turn my expensive highlights green. I don’t really have a bathing suit I like, you know, that elusive swim suit that makes me look ten pounds slimmer and ten years younger? I want to be like Jake. I want to jump into the pool and enjoy the feeling of the cold refreshing water as it washes over me. I don’t want to worry about my hair or what I’m wearing or how my body looks. I guess what I’m saying is I want to live like a dog, content with the simple delights that each moment brings, unaware of the past and unafraid of the future. Hmm, maybe the next time we’re sitting out by the pool I’ll have Mr. bookbabie toss a jar of Sanders Hot Fudge Topping into the deep end and we’ll see what happens;)

I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren’t certain we knew better. ~George Bird Evans

1. Frozen yogurt is my favorite summertime treat.

2. My favorite John Hughes movies is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.

3. My granddaughter’s sweet little head is something I love to touch.

4. The full moon looked really cool last night, very Twilight!

5. I am looking down at my poofy tummy and thinking maybe I should lay off that frozen yogurt right now.

6. When daylight fades I usually fade too.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to music in the park, tomorrow my plans include getting a new DVR box for the TV and Sunday, I want to have lunch at the Penn Grill then watch Jake (our friend’s black lab) go for an enthusiastic swim in our pool!

7 degress of moi

kreativ-blogger-award2Joann, a new blogger buddy of mine, passed along the Kreative Blogger Award to me recently. If I accept the award I have to share seven of my favorite things with you. So here we go…

1. Well, if you read my blog regularly you can probably guess the first one, my new baby granddaughter, Brooklyn. She came over on Sunday for her first family birthday dinner and her poor mommy had to beg  to get a turn to hold her own baby!

2. Spell check. I’m actually a pretty good speller but for some reason I love to see the little red underline appear under words and then get that drop down list of choices, I find it very satisfying. It’s weird, I know.

3. The moment every day when my husband comes home…I hear the back door open and his footsteps as he walks in, the soft swishing sound as he slides his briefcase under the desk in the kitchen, and then his voice, tired but relieved to be done with another busy day as he looks for me and says, “I’m home!”

4. My new camera, I carry it around in the crook of my arm like it’s a baby. It’s weird, I know.

5. Having sisters. I feel like I gypped my daughter Lizzi only giving her a brother. Maybe if I named my camera Samantha, Lizzi could think of it as her little sister?

6. The first cup of coffee in the morning (if it’s snowing or raining outside it tastes twice as good!).

7. Losing myself in a good book, which hasn’t happened in a long time. Partly because my brain is a bit fried from the past year’s ups and downs, and partly because I just haven’t found the right book:(

friday fill in

I’m participating in a new (for me) Friday blog meme today, Friday Fill-ins. Blog memes are fun because as well as giving you inspiration for posts, you also get to meet other bloggers who are playing along. So this one is pretty self explanatory. The host gives you a list of blanks and you fill them in, so here I go…

1. It’s cold and…rainy this week and my newly planted flowers are loving it!

2. Every summer I look forward to sliced mozzarella cheese layered with garden fresh…tomatoes.

3. My favorite health and beauty product is…the next magic (overpriced) facial lotion I will try that is supposed to erase wrinkles and roll back the clock!

4. I love grabbing my camera and my hubby and going for…a nice long ride.

5. Well, first of all…if you’ve never even watched Dancing with the Stars you shouldn’t knock it!

6. Bob Saget, my husband, a huge mansion on the beach;…those were the cast of characters in a recent dream and it was…life altering.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I’m looking forward to chillin’ with Doug, tomorrow my plans include…a wedding shower, dinner with friends, then watching the Wings beat the Penguins and Sunday, I want to…watch the Wings do it again!

teaser tuesday

oldpeoplekissingI’m participating in a Tuesday book meme this week where you open the book you’re reading to a random page and share two lines. I just started reading the Pulitzer Prize winning book, Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout. I opened the book to page 127 and spotted these two sentences: They weren’t young anymore, this was the thing. They kept telling each other as though they couldn’t believe it. Those lines struck me as pretty funny because my husband and I often do the same thing. He’ll complain about some misbehaving aging body part (on himself, he knows better than to notice or point out mine!) and then we’ll comment on how old we’re getting. This exchange is usually followed by shrugs and one of us saying rather Zen-like, “Well, what’s the alternative?”  And no, that is not me and Mr. bookbabie in the photo smooching, but hopefully it will be someday!
