One of my favorite blogs to visit is the odd neighbor. It’s an illustration/poetry blog by a mysterious writer-illustrator who calls her self Catnapping (her friends call her “Cat” for short). Cat’s illustrations are always darling, often hilarious, and the haiku she sometimes writes to go along with her illos is perpetually clever. One of my favorite pieces of hers is the dove animation above. I used it once eons ago (with her permission of course) on my old blog and I wanted to share it again here at the new and improved bookbabie, enjoy!

illustration friday
A while back I stumbled across the website, Illustration Friday. Each week a new subject is suggested by participants and then you create something that illustrates the topic. You don’t have to be an artist to participate, there are all kinds of submissions and levels of artistic ability and everyone is welcome. I started doing simple collages about a certain someone. I used the weekly challenge as a way to jump start my creative juices which had dried up and withered away under the daily stressors of that thing called life. Check it out sometime, it’s fun to look at the art and just maybe you’ll be inspired to start making your own!

My favorite collage artist, Claudine Hellmuth, is going to be on Martha Stewart’s show on September 12th! This is so huge and exciting for her, appearing on Martha is, as you can imagine, the Holy Grail for crafters and I am so happy for Claudine (she’s such a sweety). I commissioned her to do the above piece for Mr. bookbabie’s birthday this summer and he loved it. Her work is so whimsical and joyful. If you’re going to be home, please be sure to watch the live show (or fire up the DVR so you can watch it later).

I started doing some photo-manipulations of my own after coming across this artist on the website, deviantART.com. She takes photographs and layers them with textures so that her final pieces look like paintings. I love her work, click on the image above to see more of Kayceeus’s amazing art!
the flower girl

My latest photo-manipulation. I’m having fun playing with Corel Painter X and my photo program. Ignoring my husband and my chores I suppose (my books too) but learning new stuff is good for the aging brain cells (and for the soul). Have a safe and happy 4th!
little girl lost

I’ve been practicing using my wacom tablet and I did my first photo-manipulation from two stock photos I bought and downloaded from istockphoto.com. I edited them in PhotoImpact and Corel Painter and I’m pretty happy with the outcome. I just hope I can remember how I did it!
wacom portrait
I’ve been playing with my new Wacom pen and tablet. I took a photo of my daughter Lizzi and “painted” over it in Corel Painter. Fastest portrait I ever painted! There’s no substitute for the real thing, the smell of the paint and the way it feels in the brush, but I have to admit, this was pretty fun and there’s no clean up! If you click on the image you can view a close-up of the piece and see the brush strokes. There’s so much to learn that it’s a little overwhemling, maybe I should take a class?
