the marine

Earlier today we had a family dinner for my nephew Charlie. He just completed boot camp and he is now a Marine. That’s Charlie and my dad, Lee, wearing his old Air Force hat. When Charlie left tonight my dad hugged him and tried to tell him how he felt, but he couldn’t find the words. What do you say when you see your grandson standing in front of you, so tall and brave and strong ready to serve his country? We love him, he knows that. We are all very proud of him, he knows that too. What he doesn’t know is that when his grandfather looks at him he sees eighteen years, forty years, seventy years, a lifetime that is quickly passing by, and a lifetime that is new and still unfolding. He sees the little boy and he sees the man he has become. There simply are not enough words or enough hours in a day to say what a grandfather has in his heart on an afternoon like this. But that’s okay dad, the tears in your eyes said it all, don’t worry, Charlie knows, he knows.

Me and Mr. bookbabie went for a drive on Sunday afternoon. We went to the University of Michigan Botanical Gardens, a pumpkin filled landscape center, and to a lovely city park in Ann Arbor along the Huron River. The sun was warm, the sky watery-blue, and the air had that cool, crisp scent of autumn clinging to it that makes you want to dig out your favorite old sweatshirt and buy a jug of apple cider. We’ve been making an effort to, as they say, stop and smell the roses lately. To not only live in the moment, but to slow down, breathe deeply, and understand that the present moment is all we ever really have, we can’t change the past or control the unfolding future. It’s such a relief if you can do it, let it all go and stop living in your head, but of course it’s easier said than done. I think we all have something that can nudge us in the right direction though. For me and my husband it’s photography. When we’re out taking pictures our attention is on the world inside the viewfinder; the subject that has caught our eye, the way the light paints and colors the image in front of us. Maybe photography is really just our way of feeling like we actually do have a smidgen of control over life. We focus on one small square at a time, choosing the moments that we want to capture and hold on to.

friday rerun

cardimg.jpg

I posted this great gadget (one of my faves) on my old blog and it’s time for a rerun. Here’s a couple of quick tips for saving your card. You can right click and copy the image then paste it into a photo program, or right click the mouse over your image and “save image as” to a folder (where you’ll be able to find it!). It saves as a png file so if you want to blog it you’ll have to change it to a jpg. Just open it in your photo editing program, adjust the lighting or contrast if need be, then “save as” a jpg. Easy, now click here and go make your own!

off to the races

Mr. bookbabie went to the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix this weekend with his friend Mr. Moonflower (a.k.a. Joe). They had a great time and Mr. B took lots of cool photos and even had himself a paparazzi moment when he snapped a photo of the lovely Ashely Judd strolling towards the pits to cheer on her handsome husband, Dario Franchitti.

Tony Kanaan won the race and Danica Patrick (above) came in second after Buddy Rice ran out of fuel causing a crash that took out Scott Dixon and Franchitti.

artful monday

My favorite collage artist, Claudine Hellmuth, is going to be on Martha Stewart’s show on September 12th! This is so huge and exciting for her, appearing on Martha is, as you can imagine, the Holy Grail for crafters and I am so happy for Claudine (she’s such a sweety). I commissioned her to do the above piece for Mr. bookbabie’s birthday this summer and he loved it. Her work is so whimsical and joyful. If you’re going to be home, please be sure to watch the live show (or fire up the DVR so you can watch it later).

book doings

Author Micheal Connelly

Okay, since I am the “book”babie here’s a quick roundup of some interesting book news that I’ve gathered from the vast webosphere for your perusal. Oscar Villalon, the book editor at The San Francisco Chronical did a piece on new books coming out this fall and he says the lineup is top notch. Bookreporter.com keeps a running list of books being made into movies. I know, I know, they’re never as good as the original books, then again I’ve read some so-so books that are better as movies! If you’ve burned through your summer reading list check out the Under The Radar post on Chasing Ray, there might be a hidden gem there you’d like. The Millions blog has a fun post for August 26th with links to books we can’t read (I just wish they’d fix that typo in the post heading! Edit: Max says it was a play on words as in objet d’art, duh, I get it now). Like Crime Fiction? NPR has an excellent article and podcast about Micheal Connelly, one time beat reporter and crime writer who’s’ character of homicide detective Harry Bosch prowls the mean streets of L.A.
