passing ghosts

We’re raking up leaves here in Michigan, cutting back the withered flowers in our gardens and planter boxes and thinking about Thanksgiving Day recipes and holiday shopping. I love both summer and autumn in my home state but I’m looking forward to winter this year. For me it will be a time of rest and renewal. I plan to hibernate like a bear beneath a blanket of silent white snow, I want to meditate in front of a warm fire, I want to sew puzzle pieces of fabric into colorful whimsical quilts, I want to read books that inspire me to dream with my eyes open, I want to play with my grandchildren and watch old movies and drink hot chocolate and gain twenty pounds and remember who I am.

November Night
Listen . . .
With faint dry sound,
Like steps of passing ghosts,
The leaves, frost-crispโ€™d, break from the trees
And fall.
~Adelaide Crapsey

  1. Beautiful, beautiful!
I am not looking forward to winter this year, but you make it sound so lovely. ๐Ÿ™‚
    Gorgeous photos!

  2. I love this!! You make winter sound so inviting, I’m going to take some of your advice!

  3. Thank you so much for reintroducing me to Adelaide Crapsey, the inventor of the cinquain and to her lovely poem, November Night. The form is one I used to teach to my pupils as another syllable counting poem like the haiku. This pattern is sometimes easier for the English/American language.
I’m thinking I might try a Cinquain in my beautiful things tonight! Watch this space! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I’m from New England so I understand… although I hate snow most of the time. Driving in it, defrosting the car, shoveling it. About once every 5 years or so I will do a Christmas visit with my sisters. That’s plenty of snow for me! Give me spring and fall year round and I’d be one happy camper! ๐Ÿ˜› srsly.

  6. I am so glad to have found you. This place is “other-worldly” in its gentle beauty! I live in Michigan, too…..Grand Rapids.

  7. Sounds like you are doing much the same gardening jobs as I am – putting the garden to bed for the winter. I like the sun (we don’t get much here) so I would like to hibernate until next May ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. I do miss the crunch of the fallen leaves under my feet. There is something magical about it — but I sure don’t miss the crunch of the snow! Don’t miss digging the car out or getting stuck in ditches but if it is going to be cold you might as well at least have the beauty of the snow! I hope you have a wonderful, white winter.

  9. beautiful, just beautiful.

    Aloha,

Happy Wordless Wednesday. Stopping by to follow along and to invite you to join me for the ride at Local Sugar Hawaii. It’s a sweet, “come as you are” kind of spot and I’d love to have you with us.

  10. What a beautiful post – both the pictures and your well-timed reminder to enjoy winter and use it as an excuse to relax a little. I know a lot of us (well, me, at least) feel like we have to constantly be on the go. You’re right, though. Sometimes we just need to hibernate a little. Sounds good to me! Enjoy your preparations for winter.

  11. Beautiful images, and I really love the landscape in the lower right. I genuinely hope and pray that your health is renewed come spring. In the meantime, enjoy those hot chocolates and playing with your grandchildren (and all those other wonderful activities you mentioned).
