Outside, surrounding the plane, was the sense of weather growing vindictive-an accumulating energy with its own agenda. The weather didn’t care that they had connections to make, medication that needed to be taken, appointments that would be missed, vacations that were ruined before they’d even begun. In a Perfect World by Laura Kasischke

Sometimes when I board a plane, I look around and wonder if the people I see are the last people I’ll ever see? Or if we’ll go through an unwanted and frightening adventure together like the passengers of the “Miracle on the Hudson” flight. It’s like I’m seeing the characters from a book or a movie and I especially wonder about those sitting near me, what the couple in front of me are whispering about, or why the young father across from me is traveling alone with his baby son, is he divorced or widowed or flying home to his wife after visiting his parents? I watch the cabin crew go about their jobs, some smiling and talkative, while others looked bored and annoyed as they repeat their instructions and answer the same questions over and over again. In some ways flying is isolating, taking us away from the noise and hustle of the world below us. But it also forces an intimacy on us that we have little time for in our normal daily lives, which aside from the fear of crashing part, ain’t all bad!

  1. I never think about crashing but I do think abour germs. I’m not phobic but because the air is circulated on planes I am always aware of air born diseases. And I just hate sitting by anyone with a cold etc ~ ‘cos you can be sure when this happens, that you’ll catch it.
    Stunning photo.

  2. Nice teaser! I don’t often think about crashing, but then when I fly I’m usually trying not to think at all. I’m not a nervous flyer – it’s just that I want the whole traveling by air experience OVER as soon as possible. 🙂 Good choice, and thanks for coming by my blog!

  3. That is a beautiful shot!

But, I am not sure I will ever be able to fly again. I was always a nervous flyer, but then – I am kind of paranoid about a lot of things. But, ever since Continental Flight 3407 crashed onto a house 3 backyards away from mine in February, I have absolutely no desire to fly.

It has been 10 months, and yet still every time a plane flies over the house (we live under the approach to the Buffalo Niagara International Airport – it is actually about 10 driving miles away) I stop and listen as they fly overhead to make sure they aren’t too low, or too close.

It was a terrifying event. I don’t know how long it it will take to get over something like that.

    • I can see why you may not fly again Val, what a terrible event to have happen so close to you and your life, I’m sure it affected you profoundly:(
